The IGDA Serious Games SIG serves as a focal point for discussion and debate on Serious Games for developers, academics, and others with an interest in the field on topics including, but not limited to:
- Best practices – creative, pedagogical, legal – for creating and framing Serious Games
- Pipeline issues – how do we ensure aspiring game devs and game dev students hear about serious games?
- Opportunities and challenges in the field
- What exactly is a “Serious Game” and what is the role of “Serious Games”?
Today, the line between serious games and entertainment games grows ever more blurry, with creators of commercial titles increasingly tackling serious topics and themes in their games, technologies like VR/AR (previously little used outside of serious games) being more widely adopted in the commercial gaming space, and the creation of serious game programs at universities (paralleling equivalent programs in the commercial industry). In such an environment, how do we build and sustain a community of practice that can learn, work with, and benefit the work of our entertainment-minded peers while retaining a distinct identity?
