Statement Against Harassment in the Games Industry
19 Mar 2024We are deeply concerned about the increased harassment of historically marginalized developers and those advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. These concerns stem from similar harassment campaigns experienced during the GamerGate period in the mid-2010s.
Harassment has no place in games or the games industry, and we must create a safe, welcoming, and equitable environment for everyone. For too long, misogyny, bigotry, and intolerance of diversity have inflicted irreparable harm on individuals and communities within the gaming world. The IGDA condemns the harassment campaigns that emerged from GamerGate and will not tolerate any further hateful rhetoric within our industry.
It is imperative we take decisive action to eradicate harassment in all its manifestations. We call upon all leaders at game studios and companies, especially those with greater access to resources and influential platforms, to unite in a firm stance against harassment and in our commitment to building a better future for the games community.
We must:
- Be Vocal: Clearly communicate a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Articulate your condemnation of harassment campaigns and voice your support for those impacted by such actions.
- Protect Communities: Invest in robust systems and protocols to address harassment within your communities and games. This includes establishing clear guidelines that explicitly prohibit harassment, adopting or enhancing moderation systems, and providing safe and streamlined reporting channels.
- Educate and Inform: Provide comprehensive training programs on diversity, inclusion, and conflict resolution to your teams and communities. This can include awareness campaigns about the harmful effects of harassment and the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces, as well as training on how to address harassment.
- Amplify Voices: Use your platforms to amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized or silenced by harassment. Elevate diverse perspectives and experiences in your games, marketing campaigns, and public statements.
- Hold People Accountable: Hold perpetrators of harassment accountable for their actions. Implement and enforce codes of conduct to prevent or hold accountable people engaging in harassing behavior.
- Support Victims: Provide comprehensive support and resources for victims of harassment, including access to counseling services, legal assistance, and community support networks. See IGDA’s Harassment Resource.
- Advocate for Change: Advocate for systemic change within the industry to address the root causes of harassment and inequality. Lobby for policy reforms, industry-wide standards, and cultural shifts that prioritize safety, diversity, and inclusivity.
