SIG Spotlight: Romance and Sexuality SIG

8 Sep 2019

The IGDA Romance and Sexuality Special Interest Group is a multi-disciplinary community focused on discussing romance, sex, and sexuality in games. Inspired by the original Sex in Games SIG, their aim is to provide a safe, welcoming, and informative space to learn and talk about every aspect of relationships and sex in games. They cover topics ranging from portrayals of loving relationships to depictions of “fanservice” and sex appeal, from thematic game mechanics to the markets for romance or erotic games, and everything in-between.

The SIG hosts a Discord server for discussion, resources, and socialization; they also host monthly roundtable voice chats on a variety of focused romance and sex-related topics. They enjoyed their first in-person social meet-up at GDC 2019 at the sex-positive cafe Wicked Grounds. Michelle Clough, the Chair of the Romance and Sexuality SIG, commented on their GDC event, “It was an absolute pleasure for all involved, and we look forward to hosting more events in future!”

Clough and her SIG welcome all to join their group and discussions, “We welcome professional and aspiring game developers of every kind and anyone interested in how games can explore and evoke romantic love, sexual desire, or both! We are dedicated to promoting romance and sex in games in ways that are respectful and inclusive to people of all genders and sexualities.”
