What’s On This Month

  • No Quarter, coming November 17th, is an annual playable exhibition where four newly commissioned works from leading artists working across games are debuted. Returning to curate this year’s event is video game curator Marie Foulston, and Will Anderson who is responsible for the visual identity for this year’s event. RSVP here

News and updates from the mothership.

  • IGDA Pathfindings 2023 Registration is now open! Pathfindings is a free multi-day virtual conference from 14-17 November 2023. The goal is to showcase the amazing work by developers across the Global South. The event will include:

    • Insights from developers across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and more.

    • 20+ speakers across 18+ sessions + 9 roundtable discussions

    • Networking and meeting opportunities on the conference platform (Discord)

  • The IGDA has recently opened up a few volunteer positions for various projects, from Discord moderation support to developer resource consolidation. If you or someone you know is looking to become more involved with IGDA in a volunteer capacity, please reach out!

  • The U.S. Department of Labor has requested the IGDA’s assistance with a program that is important to the nation – the Occupational Information Network (O*NET®). The O*NET Program is the primary source of occupational information used by employers, human resource professionals, job counselors, and labor market analysts across the country who rely on such information to perform their daily work.

    The IGDA would like your help to keep this information reliable and up-to-date for Video Game Designers. You can view the current occupation description for Video Game Designer here.

    If you are an occupational expert or know of someone who has five or more years of experience for the occupation of Video Game Designer, please consider filling out the participation interest form.

  • IGDA, GaymerX, and MidBoss are joining forces to bring the community an exciting showcase to elevate and celebrate Queer Indies and their games! Join us live on November 25th at 5 PM PST for the first annual Queer Indies Showcase on IGDA’s Twitch and YouTube channels.
  • IGDA and Women in Games International (WIGI) are running a live stream event on November 25th at 9AM PST celebrating and amplifying women-led games, devs, and studios! This four-hour live stream will spotlight 6 Women-led games, Devs and Streamers!

Making Waves

  • Tribeca’s submissions are open for all categories (including games and XR!) for the 2024 festival! Check out the 2024 Festival Submissions Overview for more info.

  • Former NYU Game Center Director and award winning Designer Frank Lantz recently jointed Liv Boeree to discuss Games as an integral part of life and the role they play in society!

  • The Interactive Fiction Competition, an annual celebration of new, text-driven digital games and stories from independent creators has begun! Anyone can be a judge: Browse and play this year’s entries, and then rate them for at least five games by November 15!

Pre-Order/Wishlist

  • That Damn Goat by MAGIC Spell Studios is a chaotic multiplayer party game where you battle to keep control of the crown, all while That Damn Goat does everything in its (omnipotent) power to get in the way.

Launched

  • Treachery in Beatdown City U.N. Trouble by NuChallenger is a free prequel to Treachery in Beatdown City. Play as Blake Orama dropped off one block from the UN and fight through breakdancing president mascots, election deniers, werewolf loving athletes, and MORE

  • Puzzmo, developed in collaboration with Zach Gage, Hearst Newspaper and a small team of artists and designers, is a fresh spin on a cultural mainstay: the newspaper games page.

  • HOVERBURGER by ROBYSOFT is Wondervilles’ newest arcade game featuring a sensitive, analog spinner control, three screens for a cockpit-like feel, and multiple toggle switches to tailor the experience to your liking. With a new course generated every week, players can compete for the high score and bragging rights throughout the year!

  • Saltsea Chronicles by Die Gute Fabrik is a story-driven adventure game where you guide a crew across islands of a post-flood world known as ‘Saltsea’.

  • Black Heaven: A Necromatic Dating Sim by Occult Triange Lab is a dark fantasy/horror VN where you collect the souls of your former classmates!

  • Increment by Mark Pil is an experimental, incremental, experiential, industrial adventure. Push buttons, pull levers, and operate weird machines through trippy VR spaces on a journey to make numbers get bigger.

Ongoing Initiatives

  • Applications to join GUMBO are open! GUMBO is a non-profit collective of indie game creators located in Dumbo, Brooklyn formed to inspire and motivate each other, stay current in the indie game makers community, and expand an already amazing skill-sharing network.

  • In support of Wonderville, consider becoming a member of Death By Audio Arcade to earn discounts on event tickets, help the team raise funds to build new arcade cabinets and make other cool things happen with local game devs!

  • ANNY Exchange is a Talent Connect Initiative for Animation Nights New York. Want to participate and be added to the database of Animation Talent from all around the world? More info here

  • Animation Nights New York (ANNY) is always accepting submissions for Animated Short Films, AR Animation Experiences, VR animation Experiences, and Interactive Media (including Video Games). More info here

Waxwing Release Show at Wonderville – Death by Audio Arcade and the Brooklyn Arts Council present the release of Waxwing, a new game and cabinet by Common Opera.

Worlds Greatest Gamer at Wonderville – Hosted by “The Boss Monster” Noah Waterman, the World’s Greatest Gamer is a chance for you to test your video gaming prowess in a tournament where every round is a different game.

NYVR November Meetup – NYVR is back with another great lineup of XR Content, featuring demoes & networking.

Saturday November 11th

Monthly 2 Hour Game Jam Club: Doom Builder Doom Levels – Join Wonderville and make short games using simple to use game engines!

Monday November 13th

XR and Interactive Storytelling – Join Unity NYC at The Lower Case to explore the use of XR for interactive mixed-reality experiences. The topic of November’s meetup is about the use of XR for in-person theatrical performances

  • If you’re interested in helping make Black In Gaming a supportive and inclusive community for black game creators to thrive, consider joining the Community Team to help drive online engagement and initiatives!

Exhibit/Speak/Publish

  • Tribeca will feature video game projects throughout the 2024 festival to highlight this important medium as a form of storytelling, art, and innovation. Story is defined in the broadest sense including narrative, world building, and/or artistic excellence. Cross-medium projects and unique use of technology that challenge our current understanding of games is embraced.   • The Experimental Game Workshop (EGW) is a GDC tradition in its 22nd year: an annual session where many developers have shown novel game ideas through prototypes and design retrospective microtalks. The session is a selection of about a dozen microtalks covering the design process and creative expression of developers as they present their experimental games. Funding/Programs/Contests

  • Tech Valley Game Space is bringing back the ProtoStar Fund and Game Pitching Contest, thanks to the generous support of the Center of Excellence in Digital Game Development at RPI. Visit the ProtoStar web page to sign up for the pitching contest this December

  • NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced the launch of applications for the 3rd installation of the Founder Fellowship, a program designed to address inequities in the tech ecosystem and empower New Yorkers to seize entrepreneurship opportunities. Applications for the 2024 Founder Fellowship cohort are currently open through December 5, 2023. Applications can be submitted here

  • Empire State Development has shared the Global NY Fund Grant Program. This fund supports costs including travel and accommodation related to attending industry trade shows or conferences for business development purposes

  • Latinx in Gaming is sponsoring their third annual Grants program that has helped over 150 industry professionals from student to senior level get grow their career through funding. These funds once awarded can be used on a number of things from courses, to software, to computer parts. Apply here [Deadline November 23rd 2023]

  • Niantic Lightship is looking for Developers to contribute AR sample projects! Devs can submit applications with their project ideas to apply for grants to fund their project and ultimately have their project featured on Lightship’s sample project library. Apply here

  • The City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) “Made in NY” Logo Program provides qualified digital gaming companies with the ability to use the City’s “Made in NY” logo in their game’s packaging, title screen and/or game website. Find more info here
