The Long Island Retro Gaming Expo returns to the historic Cradle of Aviation Museum August 8th-10th! Experience over 50 years of video game history across three exciting days.

For 8 weeks, Boshi’s place has been running a class on Games & Adaptations, discussing intertextuality in its many forms. Join them on Friday, august 8, for an evening of games in dialog with other works! CLICK HERE for their website.

On The Horizon

  • Wonderville is hosting a one-day Alt.Ctrl Festival on Sunday August 24th from 4pm – 10pm! To stay up to date, keep an eye on the event page here.

  • XR Motion Conference at NYU Tandon @ The Yard will be a day filled with all things XR and motion technology, perfect for anyone interested in the future of immersive experiences. Happening October 25th!

Level Up Tuesdays with Coexist!

Join us at Coexist Gamehouse for your go-to space to connect, learn, and grow with fellow game developers in NYC!

This month’s speaker will be Tim Rattray, who will lead a discussion on the making of his upcoming docuseries covering the NYC game development scene! He’ll address the what, the why, as well as some highlights and challenges thus far. The audience will have a chance to have their own impact on the docuseries through participation, as well as Q&A!

Making Waves

  • CLICK HERE to read Nicholas O’Brien’s new blog post titled, “Some Reflections on NarraScope.

  • Reggie Fils-Aimé, NYVG Critics Circle Board member and former Nintendo of America president, recently spoke to an auditorium of Bronx high school students at the Lab School for Finance and Technology!

  • Kyle Kukshtel’s podcast, “Game Data” is now on Youtube, with a new visual aesthetic to accompany the technical deep dives!

  • The Games Devs of Color Expo team released a new interview for the game, Space Boat. Featuring Luis Alonso, Recombobulator Games’ Principle Game Developer.

  • The Game Devs of Color Expo team has opened submissions to be included in the Game Devs of Color Support charity bundle! All of this bundle’s proceeds will go to supporting GDoC and their various programs.

  • NYU Game Center professor Alexander King recently shared a host of experimental idle/incremental games, created by students during his Economics for Game Designers class!

  • Are you a local game dev in the NY/NJ/PA/CT area and part of the Latine community? Latinx In Gaming is offering the opportunity to show off your game at their booth at Play NYC! Apply here! Deadline is July 31st

  • [Coming Soon] CYBRLICH and the Death Cult of Labor by CYBRLICH Studios – An adrenaline fueled FPS/boomer shooter about a buff barbarian hacker taking down an evil undead corporate overlord

Demos

  • Cozy Beach by LunaBeat Games – A cozy getaway on a twilight beach packed with fishing, treasure, tropical drinks and more enjoyed through local co-op or online play.

Pre-Order/Wishlist

  • Press a Button Simulator by Erik Rydqvist – Spend however long you want in a room, pressing that button. Don’t look for anything else because there is nothing but the button!

  • The Indomitable Rocket Dog by AndyMakes – A blazing fast time trial game about a good dog that shoots rockets and uses momentum to fly through a psychedelic club.

Launched

  • Dyebreaker by Running Jump Games – A 2v2 air hockey platformer that has been a staple at Wonderville for two years, and is now available on Steam!

  • Skirmish Society – A daily territory control game in the vein of Diplomacy embedded in your Discord network.

  • ChipWits by ChipWits Inc. – An open-ended programming game for both beginners and experts! Inspired by the 1980s original, it combines puzzle games, automation, and programming.

Ongoing Initiatives

  • Applications to join GUMBO are open! GUMBO is a non-profit collective of indie game creators located in Dumbo, Brooklyn formed to inspire and motivate each other, stay current in the indie game makers community, and expand an already amazing skill-sharing network.

  • In support of Wonderville, consider becoming a member on WithFriends to help to keep the arcades working and pay for parts and maintenance!

  • ANNY Exchange is a Talent Connect Initiative for Animation Nights New York. Want to participate and be added to the database of Animation Talent from all around the world? More info here

Brooklyn Experimental Electronic Music Group Showcase – Join the local electronic music community for a showcase featuring an eclectic mix of New York City artists working in a variety of styles.

Puff Puff Playtest – Part of a series of unique cannabis-themed Game Night events featuring Made-in-NYC indie games, in conjunction with locally licensed cannabis dispensaries.

 

Sunday, July 20th

Animation Nights New York (ANNY) Virtual Events – ANNY is a monthly screening event and annual festival featuring a curated program of animated short films from all around the world.

Saison Zero at Wonderville – Saison Zero is a free, beginner-friendly monthly tabletop role play game meetup dedicated to introducing folks to games other than just D&D. This month featuring Fiasco and more!

 

Wednesday, July 23rd

GameMaker New York Meetup at Gumbo – Gumbo NYC and Shattered Journal Games have teamed up to host a GameMaker meetup for developers to showcase their games!

Women in Games Monthly Chill – Experience the oldest cappuccino machine in NYC with Women in Games!

 

Thursday, July 24th

NYC Indie Dev Night with Playcrafting – Indie devs, gamers, publishers, industry vets and students – this is the place to come meet others in the community, network and talk shop – and check out what games NYC is cookin’ up!

 

Tuesday, July 29th

Wonderville’s last Tuesday of the month PLAYTEST – Come to Wonderville to playtest in production games! If you’re a developer, bring your game! No signups required.

NYC Handmade Meetup at GUMBO – Part of the NYC Handmade Cities meetups, watch/present demos of software projects or something new you’ve learned!

Killer Queen NYC Presents: Soiree Framboise, a Brooklyn Coronation Afterparty – All players and fans of Killer Queen, old and new, are welcome to celebrate 10 years of the premier tournament!
