Video game consulting firm The Powell Group has launched a brand new online masterclass for video game industry professionals wanting to gain insight into the industry’s most pressing topics. The IndieGameBusiness Masterclasses is an online series of classes lectured by industry thought leaders that covers a range of popular topics all professionals should learn. Topics include game development, launches, marketing, community building, streaming, localization, and more.

Passes for a class cost up to $250, a quarter of what other organizations charge for similar classes. Additionally, IGDA members can take 25% off that price via the Discounts page. The Powell Group will be donating a ticket to a developer for each ticket purchased, as part of its goal of educating game developers around the world.

The list of courses include:

  • Releasing Your Game on Multiple Platforms
    • Heather Chandler has led teams from indies to Fortnite over the last 20 years and she’s going to teach you how to optimize your production to ship on multiple platforms.
  • The Business of Games – a Philosophical Approach
    • Larry Kuperman (Director of Business Development at Nightdive Studios) How business skills such as networking and quantitative analysis can help developers solve problems such as how long a game can be in development and still be expected to generate a profit.
  • Game Development for Designers 101
    • Elaine Gomez is a game designer with E-Line and a co-founder of Latinx In Gaming. Her class is covering Unity game development without the need to code from scratch.
  • The Game Writer and the Narrative Designer (and How You Can Be Both)
    • Toiya Kristen Finley, PhD literally helped write the book on game narrative (“The Game Narrative Toolbox” from Focal Press). Her class will show you how to understand the differences between game writing and narrative design and what skill sets you’ll need to be successful at both.
  • The Ins and Outs of Video Game Localization
    • Marina Ilari and Florencia Fole from Terra Localizations bring their decades of experience to you in this masterclass. They will cover everything from how to build your localization plan to the languages you should focus on, how much to budget, and how to streamline your process.
  • Designing Immersive Experiences Through Visual Narrative
    • Natasha Skult is widely regarded as one of the experts in narrative design. Her course is designed to give a wide perspective of terms and practices in digital art and visual culture regarding concepts of game aesthetics and visual narrative. It will present a multidisciplinary and cross-media framework of the study engaged by various cases from game development practices.
  • Marketing Games, WTFFF (What’s the Fun, Focus, and Features?)
    • Chris Faylor has helped launch all manner of games from AAA hits like Borderlands, Homeworld, to indie games Risk of Rain, and Trover Saves the Universe. In his course, you’ll learn how to create a marketing plan (be it your first or fiftieth) that celebrates the fun, focus, and features of your game.
  • How To Make Your Company Stand Out In A World Of Virtual Events
    • Fedor is the Co-Founder of MeetToMatch, the gold standard in only meeting systems for the game industry. This will be a hands-on tips & tricks course on how to use the current growth of digital events to your advantage: find that publisher contract, promote your title, or pitch your tech successfully every time after this course.
  • Community Building For Games, A Path To A Successful Launch
    • Michael Brown is the Co-founder and CEO of Vicarious PR, an award-winning video game PR and marketing agency. His course will teach you about how to build a community for your game. The goal is to give you ideas and applicable advice you can start implementing immediately into Social media, PR and marketing.
