What’s On This Month

  • On February 17th, Black Web Fest is hosting an in-person Black History Month Game Jam! This event provides early-career and aspiring game developers with an opportunity to build a playable game, learn from industry experts and connect with the community! Free food will be provided throughout the event as well as prizes.

On the Horizon

  • Unity NYC at Microsoft is back! Unity NYC aims to meet the needs of Unity users in the NYC area – including creators, developers, artists, designers, musicians and others – by providing high-quality networking as well as educational and professional resources to both amateurs and professionals alike.

  • The Unreleased Games Arcade hosted by Gaming Pathways is an opportunity for individual designers and companies to show off and get feedback on games currently in development: students will come to City College on March 11th to play the games, speak with their designers, and learn more about the game design process one-on-one! Apply to exhibit here

  • The IGDA Game Credits SIG’s survey to understand how game developers feel toward game crediting is still accepting responses! Take 5-minutes to fill it out here

Making Waves

  • Wonderville is now accepting submissions for their Spring 2023 Pico-8 residency! In conjunction with Death By Audio Arcade, a game will be selected to be featured on their custom Pico-8 arcade cabinet from March – May 2023. Have a game you wanna see in arcade format? Submit here!

  • Playtest Thursday at the NYU Game Center is returning for the Spring 2023 semester and remains open to the general public! Fill out the this Google Form to request access to the Playtest Thursday guest list

  • Computer Lunch’s mobile game, Cell To Singularity’s first round of limited-time events have come to a close, but new content is on the horizon! Vote on topics you’d like to see more of in the community form here!

  • Our friends over at IGDA Twin Cities hosted Mac Kendema, who spoke about his journey moving within the game industry from the midwest U.S. to Japan! Check out the recording here!

  • Talks from the 2022 Game Devs of Color Expo are continuing to roll out! Check out the GDoCExpo Youtube channel each week to catch up on all of the most recent talks.

  • The Haunting of You – In a gentrified Brooklyn, a group of ghosts has descended upon your house. They want your bodies and their home back! Solve puzzles from ghosts to gain their trust and assistance as you traverse between Limbo and the World of the Living.

  • Rosewater by Grundislav Games – A thrilling Western adventure in the alternate 19th century world of Lamplight City! Embark on a harrowing journey across the frontier with Harley Leger and her ragtag posse, encountering bandits, rebels, visionaries, eccentrics, and many more friends and foes on your quest for fame and riches.

  • Unwound by Wirescribe Group – Lose yourself in a surreal candyland adventure about transformation and escapism.

Launched

  • PocketCiv by Baby Marsupial Creations – A solitaire civilization tabletop game.

  • Skirmish Society by Andy Wallace – Played online and in Discord, Skirmish Society is a game of diplomacy and espionage that turns your DMs into marching orders.

  • Tower Escape by Final Screw – Tower Escape is a reverse tower defense game, where instead of defending against incoming enemies, you play the baddies and guide your minions to the exit.

  • Plenty of local sites were busy jamming for Global Game Jam 2023, check out some of the various projects below!

Ongoing Initiatives

  • Applications to join GUMBO are open! GUMBO is a non-profit collective of indie game creators located in Dumbo, Brooklyn formed to inspire and motivate each other, stay current in the indie game makers community, and expand an already amazing skill-sharing network.

  • In support of Wonderville, consider becoming a member of Death By Audio Arcade to earn discounts on event tickets, help the team raise funds to build new arcade cabinets and make other cool things happen with local game devs!

  • ANNY Exchange is a Talent Connect Initiative for Animation Nights New York. Want to participate and be added to the database of Animation Talent from all around the world? More info here

  • Animation Nights New York (ANNY) is always accepting submissions for Animated Short Films, AR Animation Experiences, VR animation Experiences, and Interactive Media (including Video Games). More info here

Lucidian @ the NYU Game Center – In this special event, Lucidian, a mega-game crafted for an educational context about teamwork, leadership and communication, will be a standalone experience at the NYU Game Center

  • Games for Change is partnering with Unity on a series of workshops to empower educators to build the next generation of lifelong creators in real-time 3D development. Middle and high school educators will come to learn best practices for teaching and implementing Unity in their classrooms, and receive hands-on training from experts. Funding/Programs/Contests

  • New York Music Month (NYMM), an initiative of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), is the annual June celebration of New York’s vibrant and diverse music scene. This year, MOME is looking for people to create and produce events for NYMM in June that can be online or in-person and should emphasize thought leadership, artist and business career development, as well as topics that honor and support the diverse NYC music ecosystem. Depending on the type of program, MOME is able to provide funding. Apply here [Deadline March 1, 2023]

  • The Qweerty Gamers Victoria Kennedy Grants program strives to advance visibility and representation in the global gaming and media industry. Submitted projects must aim to help shape a more inclusive LGBTQIA+ environment, themes or narratives within the gaming industry. Apply here [Deadline Feb, 24th, 2023]
