Letter from the ED – February 2022

9 Feb 2022

Greetings, IGDA and other members of the game industry,

It is my sincerest hope that you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy. February began with exciting stories from those who participated in Global Game Jam® 2022, important discussions around major acquisitions in the games industry, and news about the transition of former IGDA Executive Director, Renee Gittins, to the IGDA Board of Directors.

In the U.S. and Canada, February also marks the celebration of Black History Month, which signifies a month-long commemoration of the achievements and contributions of Black people throughout history.

Recently, the 2021 Developer Satisfaction Survey found that only 4% of respondents identified as Black, African American, African or Afro-Caribbean, which points to underlying issues of under-representation within the games industry. It is clear we must work harder to ensure the cultivation and maintenance of inclusive environments that support Black developers’ entrance and retention in the game development profession. Industry leaders, including studio executives and managers, must incorporate strategies for creating and sustaining a positive work culture while implementing practices of inclusive game design and development to better serve Black game developers.

Accordingly, the IGDA would like to recognize and highlight Black game developers within our community as we did last year, and honor their contributions to the games industry and beyond. To be featured in our spotlight initiative, please submit your information here so we can share your accomplishments with the IGDA community and celebrate your achievements.

As a reminder, the voting deadline for the IGDA’s 2022 Board of Directors elections is just around the corner. If you were an IGDA member in good standing on January 7th, 2022, please check your email for “Voting Information for the 2022 IGDA Board of Directors Election” for your ballot.

Best wishes to you and your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jakin Vela
