What’s On This Month

  • Latinx in Gaming presents: CONEXION 2023 – A Virtual Career Fair – Latinx in Gaming presents CONEXION, a Virtual Career Fair connecting Latinx professionals with career growth & jobs in the gaming industry.

  • Pratt Shows: Design is the Institute’s annual week-long exhibition showcasing design work by graduating students from the School of Design, School of Architecture, and School of Art, including Game Design! Stop by to celebrate the graduates.

On the Horizon

  • Narrascope is one month away! Registration deadline is May 26 so make sure you get your tickets in time.

  • Play NYC is back live and in-person at the Metropolitan Pavilion this August! Exhibitors, Media and Attendees are officially open to register!

  • This year’s Games for Change Festival will be bigger and better than ever, including newly expanded programming like the first-of-its-kind Games & SDG Summit at the United Nations, the flagship Games for Change Festival, the cutting-edge XR for Change Summit, and the inaugural Next Gen Fest for youth.

  • The Game Devs of Color Expo is returning online September 27-30th! Stay up-to-date with their newsletter and get updated on when talks go live, and industry openings and insight! Subscribe here!

News and updates from the mothership.

  • The IGDA Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2023 Virtual Exchange and 2024 GDC Programs. The Virtual Exchange is a development program for grantees from underrepresented communities worldwide. With access to coaching, industry veterans, and game companies, the program uplifts, educates, and empowers the next generation of video game leaders. The GDC program focuses on ensuring grantees obtain the experience they are seeking both professionally and personally, by participating in GDC in person. Applications close May 31!

  • The IGDA Localization SIG Discord server is now open for everyone! The goal is to offer a great place to discuss all actors involved in game localization. Join the community here!

Making Waves

  • The Hollyhock Foundation is requesting proposals from organizations and entrepreneurs interested in equipping and operating a new space to provide culinary arts, digital media, or video game design programs for high schoolers in NYC! The deadline for proposals is June 1, 2023, at 5:00 PM ET.

  • Talks from the 2022 Game Devs of Color Expo are continuing to roll out! Check out the GDoCExpo Youtube channel each week to catch up on all of the most recent talks.

  • In late April, the NYU Game Center celebrated the five projects that took part in the Incubator program in 2022 – 2023! Each team was interviewed by their respective executive producer on each game’s progress, future, and process. The live stream has been archived on the Game Center YouTube channel!

  • Wonderville is opening up submissions for new games on their Pico-8 arcade cabinet! The summer residency runs from June 1st – August 31st. Do you have a Pico-8 game that would work well on an arcade cabinet? Apply here! Deadline to submit is May 26th!

  • The Unreleased Games Arcade presented by Gaming Pathways was recently recapped, complete with images and highlight reels!

  • Narrative Designers! Rose Behar has started a monthly newsletter rounding up opportunities, resources, and events for narrative designers in games! Check out the May edition here

  • The recording for the recent talk on Teaching About Mental Health Through Play, presented by Hunter College and Tim Rattray is now available on our Youtube Channel!

  • Dispersal Vectors by The Sheep’s Meow is a game that simplifies systems found in nature into playable diagrams!

  • Relic Hunters Legend by Rogue Snail is an online looter-shooter Action RPG featuring fast-paced gameplay, powerful equipment and weapons, and a fun pack of rowdy rebels with different skills and abilities you can finely tune to match your playstyle.

  • Applications to join GUMBO are open! GUMBO is a non-profit collective of indie game creators located in Dumbo, Brooklyn formed to inspire and motivate each other, stay current in the indie game makers community, and expand an already amazing skill-sharing network.

  • In support of Wonderville, consider becoming a member of Death By Audio Arcade to earn discounts on event tickets, help the team raise funds to build new arcade cabinets and make other cool things happen with local game devs!

  • ANNY Exchange is a Talent Connect Initiative for Animation Nights New York. Want to participate and be added to the database of Animation Talent from all around the world? More info here

  • Animation Nights New York (ANNY) is always accepting submissions for Animated Short Films, AR Animation Experiences, VR animation Experiences, and Interactive Media (including Video Games). More info here

NYC Indie Games Social – The NYC Indie Games social is a monthly gathering for indie game devs of all stripes to mix and mingle in a casual, relaxed setting.

Thursday, May 11th

Pratt Shows: Design – Professionals and Alumni Opening – This opening event provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the Pratt Institute students’ showcasing design work from the School of Design, School of Architecture, School of Art and Game Design.

IGDA Detroit Presents: Gerald Sumpter – Gerald Sumpter will be presenting online with the folks at IGDA Detroit about art pipelines and workflows!

 

Friday, May 12th

iArt Interactive Installation Show – Join students from the Interactive Installation course for the Spring iArt Show! This year’s students come from the Integrated Media Arts MFA and Film & Media program at Hunter College, as well as an array of visiting students from CUNY Graduate Center.

 

Saturday, May 13th

Wonderville Monthly 2 Hour Game Jam Club – Each month, gather to make short games using simple to use game engines. The second month will feature Web Games with Bitsy Game Maker based on a random suggestion from Wikipedia.

 

Sunday, May 14th

Comix Library at Wonderville – The Comix Library has comic books and graphic novels to read onsite. First and second series volumes, full graphic novels, and one-off comics available to explore!

 

Monday, May 15th

NYU Game Center 2023 Twitch Showcase – Join the Game Center for a live streamed Showcase preview with interviews, trailers and gameplay of Capstone projects featured in the full showcase later in the week.

 

Wednesday, May 17th

Action Design NYC: Come Out and Play! – In this session you’ll explore Play, what it means, why it matters, and how to get more during an outdoor session.

Building and Using Virtual Reality in Education (VR in Education) – Connect with educators, developers and others in the space to discuss effective ways of developing and implementing VR in educational spaces.

 

Thursday, May 18th

NYU Game Center Showcase 2023 – Stop by and play games made over the course of the past year at the NYU Game Center! Students will be showing demos of their work, and you can meet and chat with them about their game making process.

Monthly Thursdays with Hacker Hours – Free office hours for coding help—any programming language, all levels of experience!

 

Sunday, May 21st

Animation Nights New York (ANNY) Virtual Screening – ANNY’s monthly screenings of In Competition films available for limited viewing online.

Saison Zero at Wonderville – looking to jump into the wide world of TTRPGs like D&D, but maybe a little less crunchy? Come on down to Saison Zero, this month will feature open tables for Troika! and CY_BORG

First StreamNYC 2023 Meetup, Powered by Twitch – Twitch is welcoming streamers from any platform and folks who want to learn about the world of live-streaming to hang out at OS NYC!

  • The GEE Learning Game Awards recognizes excellence in educational game design. The award is judged by international leaders in the field. Applications for 2023 are open now and are due June 1st!
  • Wonderville is opening up submissions for new games on their Pico-8 arcade cabinet! The summer residency runs from June 1st – August 31st. Do you have a Pico-8 game that would work well on an arcade cabinet? Apply here! Deadline to submit is May 26th!

Funding/Programs/Contests

  • The Hollyhock Foundation is requesting proposals from organizations and entrepreneurs interested in equipping and operating a new space to provide digital media, or video game design programs for high schoolers in NYC! Grants will support staff, equipment, and facility costs for NYC-based programming delivered by organizations and entrepreneurs interested in providing inspiring teen programs in a new space. Existing nonprofit organizations and entrepreneurs aspiring to create new nonprofits are welcome to apply. The deadline for proposals is June 1st, 2023, at 5:00 PM ET.

  • The AIAS Foundation has opened submissions for its annual scholarship programs benefiting students and early professionals in the video games industry from now until May 31st, 2023. The AIAS Foundation, WomenIn, and Girls for Gaming scholarships are provided to students and early professionals in game design, production, or business who aspire to make a mark on the games industry through their dedication, passion, and interest in pushing forward the medium of interactive entertainment. Eligible applicants can find more information here.
  • What the Hack?! Build a Better World – This invitation-only event will bring together local business owners, students from Queens College and CUNY for a collaborative idea-centric hackathon and world-building exercise. Apply here!

Collaboration

  • Join a group of seven recent grads and hobbyists from across the U.S. developing Untitled Melody, a rhythm game based on the music of talented Vocaloid artist nostraightanswer. Fill out the interest form for more info!
