What’s On This Month

  • Global Game Jam is happening January 30th – February 5th! Plenty of site options will be available around the city, including Parsons Design & Technology, Hostos Community Collge and more to come! Be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter where we’ll be highlighting as many options in the area as we can find!

  • The 12th annual New York Game Awards are returning to a live and in-person show on Jan. 17th 2023, at the SVA Theatre! Get your tickets here

  • On January 24th, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will hold a public, online hearing proposing rules for the Made in NY Marketing Credit Program for Digital Gaming Media, which will provide marketing opportunities through media outlets including bus shelters and subway cars. Send your comments and see how to join the hearing here!

  • Nominations are open until January 7th for the IGDA Board of Directors! The organization is looking to fill one (1) Director-at-Large position for a three-year term beginning April 1, 2023. More info here

Making Waves

  • The 20th annual Games for Change Festival has been announced for July 18th – 20th, 2023, at the Times Center in New York City! Learn more and submit sessions here!

  • Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab collected a list of 50+ Immersive pieces of work that mix storytelling, performance, play, design and code! Check it out here

  • Women in Games NYC has begun hosting monthly meetups! Keep an eye on their meetup page for all upcoming details

  • Talks from the 2022 Game Devs of Color Expo are continuing to roll out! Check out the GDoCExpo Youtube channel each week to catch up on all of the most recent talks.

  • The Global Game Jam Accessibility Fund is offering small grants of up to $500 to assist sites with accessibility improvements for their spaces. Apply here if interested before the January 16th deadline!

Playtest

  • The Haunting of You – In a gentrified Brooklyn, a group of ghosts has descended upon your house. They want your bodies and their home back! Solve puzzles from ghosts to gain their trust and assistance as you traverse between Limbo and the World of the Living.

Early Access/Beta

  • Duelyst II by Dream Sloth Games is a free, fair, competitive tactics game. Build your collection of beautifully animated pixel art cards and put your skills to the test on the ranked ladder!

Ongoing Initiatives

  • Applications to join GUMBO are open! GUMBO is a non-profit collective of indie game creators located in Dumbo, Brooklyn formed to inspire and motivate each other, stay current in the indie game makers community, and expand an already amazing skill-sharing network.

  • In support of Wonderville, consider becoming a member of Death By Audio Arcade to earn discounts on event tickets, help the team raise funds to build new arcade cabinets and make other cool things happen with local game devs!

  • ANNY Exchange is a Talent Connect Initiative for Animation Nights New York. Want to participate and be added to the database of Animation Talent from all around the world? More info here

  • Want to show your Pico-8 game at Wonderville? Submit to the curation team here!

  • Animation Nights New York (ANNY) is always accepting submissions for Animated Short Films, AR Animation Experiences, VR animation Experiences, and Interactive Media (including Video Games). More info here

Q&A with Tribeca Games – Join the IGDA NYC Discord as Casey Baltes answers community questions and provides insight into ways the Tribeca team goes above and beyond to put together a cohesive festival experience.

Monday, January 16th

Play to Win at Wonderville – A show where you can finally fight the comics (at fighting games.) After every comic’s set, play them at a fighting game for a chance to win a free drink. This month’s game is Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Tuesday, January 17th

2023 New York Game Awards – The New York Videogame Critics Circle (NYVGCC) will be recognizing the best games of 2022 at the 12th annual awards show, co-hosted by Reggie Fils-Aimé and Harold Goldberg.

Wednesday, January 18th

Building and Using Virtual Reality in Education (VR in Education) – Connect with educators, developers and others in the space to discuss effective ways of developing and implementing VR in educational spaces.

Thursday, January 19th

Monthly Thursdays with Hacker Hours – Free office hours for coding help—any programming language, all levels of experience!

Sunday, January 22nd

Virtual Sundays with Hacker Hours – Free office hours for coding help—any programming language, all levels of experience!

Tuesday, January 24th

Made in NY Marketing Credit Program for Digital Gaming Public Hearing – The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will hold a virtual public hearing, at which the public and interested parties are invited to submit comments and testimony on the proposed marketing credit program!
