Massive layoffs\, mental health struggles\, the list goes on. \nAt IGDA\, we’re constantly  collaborating with organizations and finding ways to best support our diverse community. One topic that has emerged frequently in these conversations is how game developers can work together to support and empower one another in their place of work. \nOn 12 December from 12 – 2PM CST\, IGDA is hosting the Worker Empowerment and Unionization in Games panel to elevate developer awareness of worker empowerment opportunities that support achieving a fulfilling and sustainable career in games. \nThis global panel and organizer workshop will highlight opportunities for developers to collectively organize and ensure safe and inclusive work environments for themselves and their colleagues. In collaboration with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and UNI Global Union\, the event will bring together representatives from various unionization efforts to share what organizing among game developers looks like around the world. \nThe panel will include Ilyasah Ellison from ZeniMax\, Pierre-Étienne Marx and Antoine B from STJV\, and Sarah Elmaleh from SAG-AFTRA. Erin Mahoney from CWA and I will serve as co-moderators. The panel will last one hour\, followed by a one hour organizer training facilitated by CWA (focused on organizing in North America) and UNI Global Union (focused on globally applicable organizing principles). \nYou may register for the event here. One of the original designers of EverQuest\, co-founder of game data giant EEDAR and game development studio Experiment 7\, Geoffrey is also Extra Credits studio director and game designer in residence. \n  \nIn 2018 Geoffrey joined Extra Credits as a board member\, severing as senior leadership for the creative staff and directing channel strategy before becoming Extra Credits studio director in late 2019. He has overseen channel growth taking Extra Credits from 1.4 to 2.6 million subscribers. \n  \nIn 2015 Geoffrey co-founded Experiment 7\, a video game studio focused on creating virtual reality strategy games with broad audience appeal. Experiment 7’s best-selling VR games are partnerships with popular brands including Catan (Asmodee) and Dungeons and Dragons (Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast). \n  \nIn 2006 Geoffrey co-founded EEDAR\, the video game industry’s premier market research and business-intelligence firm\, which was acquired by NPD in 2016. He directed the development of EEDAR’s data classification and products & services infrastructure\, and later served on its board of directors and as an evangelist-at-large. \n  \nGeoffrey’s first decade in the video game industry was as a game designer\, where he served in senior and lead design roles for numerous video game titles generating over $1 billion in combined revenue.
