[edit] How to categorize

To categorize an article, add a category link at the bottom of the page. For example, to add a page to Category:IGDA, add the following:

You can add as many categories as you want to a page. However, for best results, avoid adding multiple categories that are parents or children of each other. For example, if you add a page to Category:Special Interest Groups, it is not necessary to also add it to Category:IGDA, since the Special Interest Groups category is already a "child" category of the IGDA category.

To see a category's parents or children, go to that category, and look at the bottom of the category page, to see which categories that it is in.

[edit] Adding categories

Category creation is very simple:

To create a category, simply add its name to the bottom of an existing page. That will cause the new category to show up as a redlink at the bottom of the page. Click on the link to go that category page, and add:

 • A line or two of descriptive text
 • A "parent" category for the new category.

[edit] Modifying categories

To change a category, simply click on "edit this page" at the top, just as if you were changing an article. To change a category's parent, simply change the category that's listed on the category page.

[edit] Category sort order

Pages are listed in a category in alphabetical order, based on the first letter of the page name.

To cause a page to sort in a different way, add a pipe symbol "|" and then the word that you want it to sort on, at the end of the category name.

For example, if you wanted the page "John Smith" to sort under the letter "S" instead of "J" in the "Names" category, you would put this at the bottom of the John Smith page:

Please note that the sort order does not change the name of the page. It will still show up as "John Smith". But it will be under "S" instead of "J".

[edit] Forcing a page to the top of the category list

For some large categories it may be desirable to have one of the entries at the top of the list, instead of sorted normally. The best way to do this is to force it to sort on a space character. For example, if there were a category on Video Games, and it was desired to have the page on "General info on Video Games" at the top of the category, add the following text to the bottom of the General Info page:
